12 inmates aged 70-80 years in state jails: Govt

Shillong, 17: The state government has informed the Meghalaya High Court that 12 inmates aged 70-80 years are currently lodged in jails across the state.  

The status report, in pursuant to an order dated June 10, was submitted by the Additional Advocate General K Khan to the division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh.

Five of these elderly persons are in Shillong Jail; one in Nongpoh Jail; one in Jowai Jail; four in Tura Jail; and one person in Williamnagar Jail.”

“Considering the aforesaid, we request Mr Khan to give us the details of the cases pending against these persons… and the stage at which their cases stand,” the bench said.

The Court also directed the AAG to inform “how long these persons have been in custody and whether they suffer from any ailment/disability.”

The bench further took on record a report on the visit to Williamnagar Jail submitted by Amicus Curiae T Yangi B.

With the Amicus citing “personal difficulty,” the matter has been adjourned to August 10, 2026.
