Meghalaya HC orders bar bodies to install drop boxes for women lawyers, interns

Shillong, Aug 3: The Meghalaya High Court has directed that drop box facilities be made mandatory in all Bar Association offices and in the Bar Council of Meghalaya to enable women advocates and interns to report grievances, particularly related to sexual harassment.

The direction was issued by a division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh while hearing WP(C) No. 350/2026.

Sr Adv K Paul, appearing for the petitioners, informed the Court that the Bar Council of Meghalaya held a meeting on July 31 and is committed to the safety and dignity of women advocates and young lady interns.

He sought time to file an affidavit detailing steps taken.

Recording the assurance, the Court stated:  “Needless to state that, in the meantime and as assured by Mr Paul, drop box facility will be made mandatory in all Bar Associations as well as in the Bar Council of Meghalaya offices, at the earliest and in any event during the course of this week, so that the grievances pertaining to sexual harassment of women Advocates and interns, can be addressed.”

“Statement accepted.”

The bench also directed the petitioners to implead the Bar Council of Meghalaya and Bar Council of India as party respondents to enable them to place their responses on measures to ensure safety and dignity of women lawyers and interns.

Notice was issued returnable in two weeks.
