Agartala, Aug 9: The Tripura government plans to accord a grand reception to Asmita Dey, who won a gold medal in Judo at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, during her two-day visit to the native state from Wednesday, an official said.
Director of Youth Affairs and Sports L Darlong told PTI that the event would be held at Rabindra Bhavan.
Dey has become the first-ever Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Chief Minister Manik Saha felicitated Asmita in New Delhi in the presence of Youth Affairs & Sports Minister Tinku Roy.
During her two-day visit to the state, she will visit her village — Dakshin Sonaichari in South Tripura’s Belonia subdivision.
“Asmita will pay respects to her father, who had inspired her to win a medal at a global event, at Dakshin Sonaichari. Our only dream is to see Asmita finish on the podium at the Olympics,” Munna Pathari Dey, the judoka’s mother, said. (PTI)
