Police brace for hawker eviction drive on Aug 17

Shillong, Aug 14: East Khasi Hills police have geared up to maintain law and order during the scheduled hawker eviction drive at Laitumkhrah on August 17 and other planned protests in the district.

“We endeavour to ensure that all these protests, eviction drives, rallies will be incident-free and peaceful,” district police chief Vivek Syiem told reporters on Friday.

He said most events have sought permission and conditions have been laid down. The force will review deployment and bring in reserves if required.

“We will assess whether the security personnel we have are adequate. We will respond as and when required. We can always pull in the reserves anytime,” he said.

Syiem added that district drones will be used for surveillance during the events.

“We use drones for every mega event. Drones from the district will be put in place and yes, they will be used for surveillance.”
