Shillong, Aug 24: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) will take a final call on the state government’s invitation for talks at its emergency Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting on Tuesday, assistant general secretary Pynshaiborlang Rani said.
The government has invited the KSU for dialogue on its five-point charter of demands following the recent unrest.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had announced that the government was ready to hold talks.
Rani said the Union came to know about the invite through media reports on Monday morning and later received the official letter between 11 am and 12 pm.
He said convening the CEC on Monday itself was not possible as leaders had to be called from across districts.
“So it is difficult to call a CEC meeting because within our organisation we have leaders from different districts – West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, Ri-Bhoi. For this reason, tomorrow we will call an urgent CEC meeting in which we will take a decision regarding this letter in which the government has invited the KSU for talks,” Rani said.
Earlier on Monday, the KSU held a flag hoisting and prayer meeting at its central office at Jaiaw in the presence of former leaders.
The programme comes days after the office was allegedly vandalised during police action on the night of August 19.
“The organisation along with former leaders held a flag hoisting ceremony at the organisation’s office in Jaiaw after the police attacked the organisation’s office on the night of the 19th. The organisation held this gathering as part of strengthening the organisation as a whole and there was also a prayer on this occasion,” Rani said.
