Aug 19 violence: Meghalaya HC seeks case diaries in attack on court vehicles

Shillong, Aug 24: The Meghalaya High Court has taken strong note of the attack on its two official vehicles, in which a PSO and a driver were assaulted, during the violence reported on August 19.

Hearing PIL, a division bench of Justice HS Thangkhiew and Justice W Diengdoh on Monday perused the status report filed by the state as per its order dated August 20.

Advocate General A Kumar informed the Court about the steps taken, including constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for expeditious probe into the August 19 incidents, and produced details of cases registered on vandalism and assault.

The Court observed that investigation appears to be ongoing but except for arrest of office bearers, no further arrests have been made.

“This Court also notes that in these incidents, 2 vehicles of the Meghalaya High Court, wherein officers were present, were also attacked and persons, which include a PSO and a Driver were assaulted. With regard to these cases which appear at Sl. Nos. 7 & 8, the State respondents are to produce the Case Diary,” the order said.

The Bench directed that same expeditious consideration be given to all cases, including the attack on a public transport bus.

Listing the matter on September 1, the Court asked the state to file a fresh status report and produce the case diaries, noting that investigation is at an initial stage.
