Shillong, Aug 25: The Centre has extended the deployment of five companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Meghalaya till August 31 to maintain law and order.
In a communication on Tuesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs said four companies of CRPF and one company of RAF, whose deployment was ending on August 25, will continue till August 31.
The extension followed a request from the state Home (Police) Department on August 24.
The deployment of the five companies was made following the August 19 violence during the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) black-flag bike rally, which left two vehicles torched, 31 vehicles vandalised and 18 people assaulted.
The extension comes ahead of the talks between the state government and the KSU scheduled on Wednesday. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will chair the meeting to discuss the five-point charter of demands put forth by the union.
