Shillong, Oct 2: Paul Lyngdoh, former minister and one of the four remaining UDP MLAs, has said he would make his next political move after analysing the situation on the ground.
“All options are open, and the most important thing is to understand the mind of the supporters, the workers and all the voters,” Lyngdoh said on Thursday.
Terming the party’s current position as extraordinary, he said, “We are exercising all options. This is not an ordinary situation where a party has slid to a number which is single digit and likely to go down even further.
Lyngdoh said national issues, including the controversy over Election Commission and SIR, would influence his decision as well.
Asked about the key principles that would determine his move, he said it was too early to answer.
On whether the present realignment would alter equations for the 2028 Assembly elections, Lyngdoh said Meghalaya has seen fierce pre-poll rivals joining hands after elections, as there are no permanent friends or enemies in politics.
“We still have the Shillong parliamentary bypoll yet to be held…GHADC elections…. These are two stages that we have to cross to have a clear review of the political environment in the state,” he added.
Let probe take place first
The West Shillong legislator, meanwhile, refused to comment on the alleged extortion allegation involving police personnel in a viral video, saying, “My information is very limited, only what has appeared in the media. I cannot comment further unless I have details.”
“But any illegality should be controlled. Any act that leads to erosion of public trust in the system should be challenged and I will stand up for anything which is in the interest of the people,” Lyngdoh said.
On KSU’s demand for removal of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Lyngdoh said, “Let the probe take place first. Let the report be ready and whoever is responsible should face the music.”
