Shillong, Nov 5: The National People’s Party (NPP) had a major shot in its arm in Garo Hills as three Trinamool Congress MDCs of GHADC and a retired state bureaucrat joined the party on Wednesday.
The three MDCs, who joined the NPP, are Alphonsush R Marak, Cherak Watre Momin and Rakesh A Sangma. Retired MCS officer Pius D Sangma and Agassi R Marak, son of a former Congress MLA, also joined the ruling party.
Chief Minister and NPP national president Conrad K Sangma welcomed the new members into the party in presence of deputy chief ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar.
The NPP chief, however, clarified that the MDCs did not put any precondition for joining the party.
“The party will decide, we will all sit together,” he said in reply to a query.
“We believe that whatever decision we take based on the political situation on the ground, things will move forward in a right direction,” he said.
Deputy CM and NPP state president Prestone Tynsong said the creation of electoral rolls for newly proposed constituencies in Garo Hills is the NPP’s biggest achievement.
He also claimed that no other political party has done so much as NPP did for the interest of Garo Hills region.
“No other political party could do that,” he said.
He urged the NPP leaders in Garo Hills to work further for the interest of the community and the state under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma.
“I am very sure, we will be able to further strengthen and meet the aspiration of our people in this state,” he said.
Deputy CM and the party’s national vice-president Sniawbhalang Dhar termed the number three (MDCs) lucky for NPP, saying, “In last week, we welcomed three MLAs from different political parties and today again received three MDCs. It seems three number is lucky for the NPP.”
He exuded confidence over the three MDCs joining to further improve the NPP’s performance in upcoming GHADC election.
The party has grown both in Garo Hills and Khasi-Jaintia Hills and it hopes to win the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha bye-election and landslide victory in 2028 assembly elections, he said.
