Shillong, Nov 5: The KSU Mawprem Circle has asked the government to crack down on illegal and excessive use of firecrackers during Diwali.
In a letter to East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal on Wednesday, circle president Badonkupar Nongbri said the appeal was being made to ensure Diwali is celebrated without disturbing public peace in Mawprem.
He said the organisation fully respects Diwali and its cultural importance, even as it stressed that the celebration must be mindful of public health, environment and the well-being of fellow citizens.
Nongbri flagged that loud and prolonged bursting of crackers causes distress to children, the elderly, patients and those sensitive to noise, and disturbs residential areas. He said it is the collective responsibility of every citizen to ensure festivities do not come at the cost of others’ comfort and safety.
Referring to the Supreme Court’s direction restricting bursting of firecrackers between 8 pm and 10 pm on Diwali, the organisation said the rule must be strictly implemented. It also pointed out that as per norms, firecrackers producing more than 125 dB(AI) or 145 dB(C) Peak at four metres are prohibited and should not be sold or used.
The organisation urged the DC to direct the police to enforce the time limit, monitor shops selling prohibited crackers, initiate awareness drives on noise and air pollution, and deploy adequate personnel in Mawprem to prevent violations.
“Diwali should be an occasion of happiness, peace and goodwill rather than a source of discomfort,” Nongbri said, appealing to residents to celebrate responsibly and extend cooperation to the administration.
