Shillong, Jan 28: A demand for deployment of forces to launch of a search operation against so-called ISIS-K in Garo Hills has been raised following an alleged poster of “ISIS-K” threatening Garos has created uproar in social media.
The poster, allegedly signed by Aminur Islam, ISIS-K’s ‘Area Commander of Plain Belt Area’, has warned Garos to vacate their land before 2027.
Reacting the poster and the strong reaction to it, social activist Greneth M Sangma has written a letter to deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong, saying, “I strongly demand that immediate action be taken to deploy security forces in West Garo Hills.”
He also demanded for setting up of additional camps, search operation against ISIS-K and its associates, identification and removal of outsiders with illegal claims to land and protection of the people of Garo Hills.
He said the poster poses a threat to the people of Garo Hills, particularly in areas like Phulbari, Rajabala, Tikrikilla, Selsela, Garobhada, and Tura.
Sangma alleged that individuals from Bangladesh have dual votes in Assam and Meghalaya.
“They are attempting to claim land belonging to the Garos, protected under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution,” he said while further emphasizing that the incident highlights the need for establishment of Inner Line Permit, deletion of dual voters, separate Electoral Roll for GHADC, NRC (National Register of Citizens) in Meghalaya and strict implementation of laws protecting tribal lands.
