Administrator to wind up CMJ University

Shillong, Feb 20: Following the Supreme Court order to dissolve CMJ University, the state government has appointed an Administrator to implement winding up of the tainted university.

D Lyngdoh, a joint secretary to the state government, shall act as the Administrator to implement winding up of the University, according to an official notification.

Earlier, three senior officials visited the CMJ University campus at Jorabat and directed the university authorities to cease all financial transactions, administrative and academic activities.

They were asked not ensure that no assets, including files, computers, hard disks, or other materials are moved from the campus.

The Supreme Court order affirmed the state government’s decision to shut down the institute in 2014 for allegedly defrauding thousands of students by giving them fake degree certificates.

According to Enforcement Directorate (ED), which had lodged a money laundering case against the university, around 20,570 fake degrees were awarded by CMJ University between 2010 and 2013.

The total proceeds of crime was quantified at ₹83.52 crore out of which, the agency had attached properties worth ₹48.76 crore.
