Tura, July 26: Scores of artists, students, and young people from across Garo Hills took to the streets of Tura on Sunday, joining a protest rally organised by a local artists’ collective to voice concerns over a string of national issues and demand greater accountability from the Modi govt.
The march began at Chandmari Junction and proceeded peacefully to DC Park, with demonstrators carrying placards and raising slogans along the route. Among the chants heard were calls for “Educational Reforms Nanga Nanga!”, demanding an overhaul of the country’s education system; “Manipur Kamenga Nibo Nibo!”, seeking peace and justice in strife-torn Manipur; and “E20 Petrol ko Nangja Nangja!”, registering opposition to the proposed rollout of E20 petrol.
Accountability Over Student Deaths
At DC Park, speakers took turns addressing the gathering, focusing sharply on the Modi govt’s handling of a recent incident that claimed the lives of several students. While acknowledging the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, protesters argued that a resignation alone did not constitute accountability for the lives lost. They demanded a transparent, independent inquiry and concrete action against those found responsible.
Wider National Concerns
Speakers also drew attention to a range of other issues troubling the country, including the continuing unrest in Manipur, the flood crisis unfolding in Assam, and recent incidents of police lathi-charges on student protesters elsewhere in India. They urged citizens — particularly the youth — to stay informed and engaged in defending democratic values and constitutional rights.
Opposition to E20 Petrol
A significant focus of the rally was the Modi govt’s proposed nationwide implementation of E20 petrol. The demonstration is being seen as one of the first public protests in Meghalaya against the fuel policy. Protesters raised concerns over its potential impact on vehicles and consumers, and called for broader public consultation before any rollout.

The rally concluded at DC Park with an open forum, where participants reflected on the country’s current situation and underscored the importance of peaceful democratic expression, civic responsibility, and collective action.
