ASP hurt as scooty hits him at traffic checking

Police to register attempt to murder case against riders

Shillong, Sept 18: Two scooty riders, suspected to be KSU members, jumped a traffic checking and hit an additional superintendent of police (ASP), who came on their way, causing grievous injuries to him in the early hours of Friday.

The ASP in-charge Traffic, East Khasi Hills, Lovish Garg, was hit by the speeding scooty as checking was under way near Samkhamti Petrol Pump at Urkaliar around 1:30 am.

While police signalled the duo on the scooty to stop, they ignored the signal and sped ahead, hitting the ASP on the way.

“One scooty with two males attempted to evade the police checking and proceeded aggressively without stopping, despite police directing them to stop,” SP (City) Dangsan Khyriem said.

As the ASP tried to prevent their escape, the scooty accelerated and hit him, causing him serious injuries, the SP said.

The officer was rushed to Woodland Hospital and is now in the HD Unit.

Terming the act deliberate, Khyriem said, “The circumstances indicate that the act was deliberate and appears to have been intended to cause grievous injury to the officer and escape from being checked.”

Police are registering an attempt to murder case. The two accused are suspected to be members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).

The SP also asserted that strict naka/checking operations will continue in the interest of public safety and maintenance of law and order.

“All persons are expected to comply with lawful directions issued by police during such operations. Any attempt to evade police checking or act in contravention against police on duty will be dealt with firmly in accordance with law,” he said.
