‘Assam setback won’t hold NPP back’

Shillong, May 7: National People’s Party (NPP) chief and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said the setback in the Assam assembly elections would not hold the party back, emphasising that “courage to take the first step” defines an organisation.

“Nothing went wrong. What is important to note is that we don’t shy away from giving a shot. We have the courage to move forward,” Sangma said on being asked “what went wrong for NPP in Assam” on Thursday.

“I remember in Manipur when we first started off, we got two people who joined us and that is how every long journey starts with the first step,” he pointed out.

Admitting challenges in building leadership, he said, “I think what is important is to have the courage to be able to take that step in spite of all challenges… that’s what determines an organization and… leadership.”

He termed the Assam results a “difficult phase” for the party, saying, “We had a very difficult phase in Assam but that doesn’t deter us… more importantly we will learn from situations that unfolded and make sure that we improve and become better in the future.”

On the BJP’s assertion that it would lead the Meghalaya government in 2028 after its wins in West Bengal and Assam, the Chief Minister said public mandate would be the final factor.

“Any party can say anything… at the end of the day it is the people who will decide and it is the numbers that will decide. We have seen the numbers in the past…,” he said.
