Ban on illegal stone mining linked to attack, alleges ACHIK group

Tura, Jan 10: Garo pressure group ACHIK whose members came under attack from unidentified men in the Rajabala region leading to the death of one of their members attribute the incident to a case of illegal stone mining in the area.

The incident took place in Goalgaon village under Rajabala Police Station, at around 2 O’clock in the afternoon, in which a member of ACHIK organization, identified as Dilseng M. Sangma of Amokgre, Phulbari, West Garo Hills District was assaulted by unidentified persons. He was rushed to Bhaitbari CHC and referred to Tura Civil Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries on the way.

The organisation leaders told police, during their meeting at SP office late Friday night, that they had gone to the area to inspect a site where illegal mining was reported by the village headman (Nokma) and it was on the return that they were targeted by a mob.
