Cabbies warn of hunger strike, peace rally

Demand for ban on outside tourist vehicles 

Shillong, Sept 19: Tourist taxi associations of Khasi Hills have decided to resort to hunger strike if the government failed to fulfill their demand for a ban on tourist vehicles from outside the state plying to various tourist destinations.

“We will hold a peace rally and hunger strike if the Chief Minister does not respond to our demands,” said Balajied Jyrwa, member of the JAC of All Khasi Tourist Taxi Association and All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association following a meeting of the associations at Malki Football Ground here on Wednesday.

The meeting decided to send a letter stating their demands to the Chief Minister.

“All vehicles registered outside Meghalaya should stop only at ISBT Shillong or any designated place provided by the state government and local tourist vehicles should ferry the tourists to the tourist spots within the state,” said Jyrwa.

Claiming that the associations of Meghalaya are closely working with the associations of Assam, he said they (Assam associations) understand that the demands are genuine.

He also pointed out that compared to the tourist vehicles from Assam operating in Meghalaya, there are very few Meghalaya vehicles plying to tourist spots in Assam.
