Captain Williamson Sangma State University marks milestone with induction of first PG batch

Shillong, Aug 18: Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU) officially welcomed its first batch of postgraduate students at an induction programme held at its main campus on Monday.

Delivering the keynote as the chief guest, Speaker of the State Assembly, Thomas A. Sangma, urged students to embrace the transformative spirit of higher learning.

“This is your time—to learn, to lead, to rise,” he said. “You arrive here not just as students but as seekers of knowledge, ready to shape the future of our state and nation.”

Calling the launch a landmark event for Meghalaya, VC Dr. Vasanthi Vijayakumar outlined her vision of making CWSSU a hub for holistic growth and civil service preparation.

She expressed confidence that within the next three to five years, the university will produce 4–5 IAS officers, alongside educators, researchers, and social leaders.

She also credited Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, the Chancellor, the Education minister, and state administrators for their strong support in establishing the university.

The decision to keep CWSSU outside the CUET (Common University Entrance Test) framework, she added, has enhanced accessibility, encouraging more students to enrol.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Subir Marak hailed the university as a dream fulfilled under the vision of the chief minister.

“From vision to execution, the chief minister has delivered,” Marak said. “It is a matter of pride for me that the university stands in my constituency, bringing excellence in education to our state.”

The event was also attended by TMB Chairman J.D. Sangma, Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak  and Advisor Dr. Tony Travert Ch. Sangma, IFS (Retd.).

The induction marks the beginning of an academic journey at Meghalaya’s first state university, which was inaugurated on January 13, 2025.

Since its establishment, CWSSU has achieved rapid progress under VC Dr. Vasanthi Vijayakumar, who spearheaded the creation of original syllabi across 14 humanities departments with faculty inputs and Academic Council approval.

The university also launched a Shillong regional campus offering four in-demand postgraduate programs. Today, CWSSU has over 55 faculty members, including science experts, supporting its 12 affiliate colleges.
