Health dept to pay Rs 10 lakh for pregnant woman’s death

Shillong, March 24: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has asked the Health department to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation for the death of a pregnant woman at Jowai MCH Hospital in June last year.

The incident caught the attention of MHRC through a news report, leading to the Commission taking suo moto cognizance of the matter.

Her family members from Jalaphet village in East Jaintia Hills had alleged gross negligence by hospital staff.

According to an MHRC statement, a Health and Family Welfare enquiry committee formed on July 7, 2025 found “number of deficiencies relating to the death of the patient.”

“The Commission has passed the final order on March 23, 2026 addressed to the Additional Chief Secretary to the government of Meghalaya, Health and Family Welfare department with a recommendation for payment of compensation of Rs 10 lakh only to be paid to the children of the deceased in order to improve their living conditions as they have lost their mother,” said MHRC secretary L Ch Marak in the statement issued on Monday.
