Tura, March 16: Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Albinush R. Marak, has resigned from his post with immediate effect, citing moral responsibility amid changing political circumstances.
In his resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of the Council on March 16, Marak stated that throughout his tenure he had made sincere efforts to work for the welfare, development, and overall progress of the people of Garo Hills. He noted that under his leadership, the Executive Committee undertook several initiatives and worked towards framing and implementing rules, regulations, and laws aimed at safeguarding the rights, customs, and interests of the people.
Marak also mentioned that although a number of development initiatives were launched during his tenure, certain circumstances prevented some of them from being fully carried out.
The outgoing CEM acknowledged that 21 Members of the District Council (MDCs) had decided to move a motion of no confidence against his leadership. He stated that in a democratic institution, the confidence and support of the majority of members is vital for the smooth functioning of the Executive Committee.
“In view of the present circumstances and on moral grounds, I believe it is appropriate for me to step down from the office rather than continue in a position where the majority of members no longer have confidence in my leadership,” Marak stated in his letter.
Despite stepping down, Marak reaffirmed his commitment to public service, saying that his dedication to the welfare and betterment of the people of Garo Hills remains strong. He added that he will continue to serve the public in whatever capacity possible.
He has requested the Chairman of the Council to kindly accept his resignation from the post of Chief Executive Member.
