₹1400 crore worth projects implemented for the district since 2018, additional ₹400 crore earmarked for the next 2-3 years
Baghmara, June 18: South Garo Hills district celebrated its 33rd foundation day, here in Baghmara today, with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma joining the celebrations with the citizens of the region by attending the event where he highlighted his government’s major initiatives to develop the third oldest district of Garo Hills.
The chief minister announced that projects worth ₹1400 crore have been implemented in the district since 2018, with an additional ₹400 crore earmarked for the next 2-3 years.

“Since my visit to Baghmara in 2018, I promised to prioritize the development of the district, and over the past seven years we have been able to implement projects worth ₹1400 crore, creating opportunities for our people,” said Conrad K Sangma in the presence of his ministerial colleagues- Cabinet ministers Shakliar Warjri, Marcuise Marak, A T Mondol and Rakkam A. Sangma, alongside MLAs Sanjay Sangma (Mahendraganj), Kartus Marak (Baghmara), Sengchim Sangma (Chokpot), and GHADC CEM Albinus Marak.
Highlighting the region’s progress, the chief minister urged for collective action to bring about inclusive growth as the state approaches its 60th year of statehood.
“Every district must plan initiatives to make us proud as Meghalayans,” said the chief minister as he called for promotion of sectors such as sports, infrastructure, and trade for South Garo Hills.
“If we want to transform Meghalaya, the government alone cannot turn it around, every citizen has to come together to work unitedly and with a synergistic effort,” added Conrad K Sangma.

The chief minister gave special mention to the boom in tourism in the state and how it has become a key driver of economic growth, creating many entrepreneurs and boosting the rural economy.
Praising the local entrepreneurs for starting homestays and ventures, he said “This is the beginning of an economic transformation that will secure our future.”
Highlighting the vast potential for carbon credits in the most forested region of the state, Conrad K Sangma called upon the residents to protect South Garo Hills’ rich forests and rivers to attract companies seeking to offset carbon emissions.
On the occasion of the district celebrations, the chief minister launched the Meghalaya Economic Inclusive Program (M-EIP) and CM Fellowship, distributed cheques under MegCARE, and laid the foundation stone for a synthetic athletic track and a new building for Captain Williamson Government Higher Secondary School. Additionally, he felicitated top-performing schools and students from recent HSSLC and SSLC exams.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated the new Prime Hub in Baghmara and visited the revamped Baghmara Police Station, upgraded under the Police Infrastructure Development Fund, a flagship initiative. “We are focused on creating better infrastructure for smooth administration,” he said.
Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma and Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri also spoke at the event lauding the Chief Minister’s efforts toward holistic state development.
Representative of Partnership Lead Asia at Rabobank Acorn, Ham Haverkort, also addressed the gathering stressing on the importance of collaborative opportunities.
