Condolences pour in for Latiplang Kharkongor

Shillong, Sept 13: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Friday held a condolence meeting in memory of Latiplang Kharkongor, former Chief Executive Member (CEM) and Member of District Council (MDC) from Nongthymmai who passed away on Thursday.

CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem, Deputy CEM Pynshngain N. Syiem, Executive Members (EMs) and chiefs from various Himas and Elaka were present at the service.  

The KHADC had scheduled events to open various Himas at Mawprem on Friday but they were all rescheduled for Monday.

Sanbor condoles death of ‘loving friend’ 

South Shillong BJP legislator Sanbor Shullai on Friday condoled the demise of Kharkongor, 

Expressing sorrow, Shullai in his condolence message, said, “It greatly pains me to convey my sincere feeling and great sorrow at the sudden demise of my loving friend (Late) Bah Latiplang Kharkongor. Fondly known as Bah Heh, holding 4th consecutive terms and sitting MDC (Member Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council) representing Nongthymmai Constituency. He was a philosopher, a guide and a protector.”

“He was a man full of dynamism, frank and candid in nature and a superb orator full of enthusiasm and a courageous person calling a spade a spade.  He will be remembered for his impeccable service and recall his humanitarian qualities and faith in secularism and pluralistic in the Society.  He was a father and guardian to the poor, the needy and the weaker section.

Bah Heh, God knew and saw your sufferings.  He then decided to end the tears, the pain and other things that drove you around the bend.  It’s true death leaves a heartache that can never ever heal, but love leaves a golden memory that nobody can steal.  It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home,” Shullai said.

The Nongthymmai MDC passed away on Thursday evening at Shillong Civil Hospital after a prolonged illness.

Kharkongor was elected to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) four consecutive times since 2004.

He was also elected as Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC, serving from November 22, 2019 to March 20, 2020.

Kharkongor became the first independent member to be elected as KHADC CEM after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) executive committee led by Teinwell Dkhar of the UDP was defeated in the no-confidence motion.
