Counting for ADC elections amid tight security today

Shillong, Feb 24: The fate of 272 candidates – 158 for KHADC and 114 for JHADC – will be known as counting for the autonomous district council (ADC) elections takes place on Monday.

Leaders of the National People’s Party (NPP), which led the executive committees (EC) in KHADC and JHADC, have already exuded confidence over winning majority seats in both the councils. However, the opposition Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) and NPP ally United Democratic Party (UDP) too reportedly have strong prospects in many constituencies.

The ADC elections on February 21 recorded 85.58 per cent voter turnout in JHADC and 76.77 per cent in KHADC. Repoll had to be conducted in four polling stations in East Jaintia Hills – Wapung Skur A and Wapung Skur B under Musniang-Rangad constituency and Bataw A and Bataw B under Bataw-Lakadong constituency – after mob vandalism causing damage to EVMs there on the polling day.

Meanwhile, the state government has made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident in all the counting centres spread across Khasi-Jaintia Hills .

The counting for Jirang, Nongpoh, Mawhati, Umsning and Umroi constituency will be held in NSCA Indoor Stadium at Nongpoh.

For Lyngkyrdem-Laitkroh, Nongskhen and Shella constituencies, the counting will be held at SDO office at Pynursla, and for Shella and Sohra constituencies, the counting will be held at SDO office at Sohra.

In Eastern West Khasi Hills, the counting for Mairang-Nongkhlaw and Pariong-Mawthadraishan constituencies will be held at DC office, Mairang.

In South West Khasi Hills, the counting for Mawkyrwat and Langrin constituencies will be held at DC office at Mawkyrwat and in West Khasi Hills, and the counting for Nongstoin, Rambrai-Jyrngam and Mawshynrut constituencies will be held at DC office, Nongstoin.

The 29 ADC constituencies of JHADC are divided from the seven legislative assembly constituencies in Jaiñtia Hills, but the 29 ADC constituencies of KHADC formed almost the same areas of the 29 legislative assembly seats.

In KHADC, there were 1,798 polling stations the JHADC had 483 polling stations.
