Shillong, Dec 15: The Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) has demanded for a hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for deficit school teachers to 51%, on par with government employees, and release the arrears.
While making the demand in a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the association cited “severe financial hardship and mental anguish” faced by thousands of deficit teachers due to stagnant DA rate of 43%.
“We strongly urge the Government to take immediate and decisive action to enhance the DA of deficit teachers at par with Government servants and release the arrears of past DA enhancements,” stated KJDSTA letter issued after a meeting at Malki ground here on Monday.
The association has threatened to launch agitation if the government failed to meet its demand before 15 January 2026.
The KJDSTA also urged the Chief Minister to intervene in the matters of implementation of Centralized Provident Fund system, release of Death-cum-Retirement Gratuity (DCRG) to retired teachers, and ensuring error-free MEGH-SIMS portal.
The state government recently announced 2% DA hike for employees, bringing the rate to 51% effective July 1, 2025, it mentioned.
However, deficit teachers continue to receive 43% DA, sparking protests and demands for parity.
