Dhar opens Rilang College, announces Rs 5-lakh aid

Shillong, May 31: In a significant initiative boosting education sector, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has inaugurated the new building of Rilang College at Mawsaw village in South West Khasi Hills.

He also announced Rs 5 lakh for teachers’ salaries, saying education in the constituency has “moved forward” with new schools, a JNV campus, and a planned EMRS.

“Education has not stood still in our constituency or our district. It has moved forward,” Dhar said.

“In eight years, we have received government sanction for dozens of school buildings and rebuilt many of them.”

He highlighted the shift of JNV to the district headquarters. “For decades, our children had to go to Nongstoin for JNV. Today, we have our own JNV at Mawlamwir, right here in Mawkyrwat.”

On Rilang College, he noted, “We laid the foundation in 2019 and moved step by step, year by year. Anything done well, even if it takes time, will be stronger and better.”

Dhar praised the region’s approach to development. “The people of Mawkyrwat have a spirit of building together for the common good. We do not bring politics into development work.”

He pledged continued support, saying, “I will take up the fencing work… If I cannot complete all 600 metres at once, we will do it in phases. And I will donate Rs 5 lakh this week to help pay teachers’ salaries.”

“With this Rilang College inaugurated today, I believe applications will start coming in from tomorrow… The hard work of the local MLA (Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar) has opened a new college, setting an example for others to follow,” he said.
