Former MDC Sofiur Rahman Arrested

Tura, March 16: Former Member of the District Council (MDC) Sofiur Rahman has been arrested by Meghalaya Police in connection with the recent unrest in Garo Hills, where he allegedly delivered highly inflammatory speeches that contributed to rising tensions and subsequent violence.

According to police sources, Rahman was taken into custody late Sunday night by a team of Meghalaya Police from his residence in the plains belt region of West Garo Hills.

Authorities allege that Rahman made provocative statements during public gatherings, which are believed to have aggravated tensions in the region. The situation later escalated into incidents of violence in Tura, Williamnagar, and Chibinang in the plains belt area.

Police officials stated that the arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into the disturbances that recently affected several parts of Garo Hills.

Further legal proceedings against Rahman are expected as the investigation continues.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in sensitive areas to prevent any further escalation of the situation.
