Govt gears up to complete housing project for poor

Shillong, Nov 25: In a ray of hope for the much-delayed housing project for BPL families at Nongmensong Lumphira in Shillong, the state government has initiated steps to complete the remaining construction work and plan additional buildings as well.

A new DPR (detailed project report) is currently being drafted by the Urban Affairs department for the remaining work.

The DPR is expected to be ready in a month, said urban affairs minister Sniawbhalang Dhar while assuring that the housing units would be handed over to the intended beneficiaries upon completion of the project.

“These homes are meant for the underprivileged, and we are committed to delivering them as intended,” Dhar said.

Sharing the public concern over the unfinished buildings turning into den of criminals and drug peddlers, he said, “I am deeply concerned about this. I’ve instructed officials to expedite the DPR and ensure swift progress on both the incomplete and new constructions.”

Meanwhile, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has urged the government to either expedite the projects or take measures to secure the area. They highlighted the growing risks posed by the abandoned structures to local safety and well-being.

“This work is for the community, and we are determined to create a safer, better environment for the residents,” the minister said.NST projects on track.

Meanwhile, the urban affairs minister expressed satisfaction over the progress of projects coming up in New Shillong Township (NST).

Reaffirming the government’s commitment towards the ambitious initiative, he said, “A lot of projects are underway in NST and many more are yet to come. Within three to four years, the township will undergo a drastic transformation.”

He also highlighted the vital financial support driving the project, saying, “Requesting funds is a continuous process with the central government. We are thankful to the Government of India for their consistent support, especially for NST projects.”

Underscoring its huge expectations from NST, the government has already spent over ₹331 crore on land acquisition while ₹83.07 crore has been generated from land premiums.
