Process on to build system to facilitate admissions to all students

Shillong, Apr 10: Admission in higher secondary standard in many educational institutions has been kept in abeyance in order to develop a system to ensure admission to all students, who have cleared the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams recently.

The step had to be taken following the sharp rise in SSLC pass percentage – 55.80% last year to 87.10% this year – resulting in an additional 20,000 students going to seek admissions in class XI.

Informing this, education minister Rakkam A Sangma on Thursday said, “We have stopped the admission process in many institutions,” he said.

Observing that there would not be much difficulty in admissions in Shillong where the pass percentage used to be 70%-80% every year, the minister said the government anticipated problems likely to be faced by students in rural areas.

Stating that the government is in the process of upgrading secondary schools to higher secondary schools to facilitate more admissions, he said, “We are meeting with all heads of institutions. I will be meeting the deputy commissioners of the different districts in Garo Hills region next week.”

Four secondary schools will be upgraded to higher secondary schools – three in Khasi-Jaintia Hills and one in Garo Hills, he said.

“We are encouraging grant-in-aid institutions to introduce morning sections to increase their student intake capacity,” he said.

Morning sections will also be introduced in the government-run institutions, Sangma said.

“We want to have a structured process as there will be additional 20,000 students this year. We are working on the modalities and formality on how to absorb all of them. We don’t want to see our students not getting admission,” the minister said.

Informing about an initiative to build a well-structured system to inform the students about the intake capacity of various schools, he said.

“We are meeting with them (different institutions) to discuss if admission is full, why not introduce a morning section or introduce a separate section. We will ensure all get admission in the state,” he stated.
