GP Singh given farewell, Harmeet Singh takes charge as in-charge DGP

Guwahati, Jan 29: Harmeet Singh, a 1992-batch IPS officer, officially took over as in-charge Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam on Wednesday, succeeding Gyanendra Pratap Singh at the Assam Police headquarters in Ulubari.

Harmeet Singh will also continue to hold multiple key positions, including Director General of Home Guards and Commandant General of Civil Defence, Special DGP (Headquarters), Special DGP & Director, Fire and Emergency Services, and Special DGP (Border).

GP Singh, who had been DGP of Assam since February 1, 2023, has now been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He was given a grand farewell at a function held at the 4th APBN headquarters in Kahilipara on Wednesday morning.

In his farewell speech, GP Singh expressed his gratitude to all officials of the police force for their cooperation during his tenure. He also thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his continuous support in strengthening the Assam Police and expressed optimism about the force’s future.

“Assam Police has gained national recognition due to the dedication and commitment of its personnel,” Singh remarked, urging officers to maintain their health and continue their selfless service.

GP Singh paid tributes to the martyrs of the police force at the Swahid Bedi. He also extended his heartfelt thanks to his colleagues, stating, “Your sincerity, cooperation, and dedication have shaped my tenure. Assam Police will continue to shine with its integrity and commitment.”


In his address, new in-charge DGP, Harmeet Singh, acknowledged GP Singh’s contributions in strengthening the police force. “During his tenure, GP Singh played a pivotal role in enhancing efficiency through promotions, professional responsibilities, and infrastructure development,” he said. He further sought GP Singh’s continued guidance to bolster the Assam Police in the future.

On Tuesday, GP Singh was given a ceremonial farewell by senior officials from the state administration, police force, home guards, civil defence, and fire and emergency services at a function held at the Assam Police Institute. The event was anchored by Guwahati Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta.

Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya also bid farewell to GP Singh at Raj Bhavan, Guwahati. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the DGP’s official residence, where he conveyed his best wishes to GP Singh and his family. He commended Singh’s contributions to law enforcement and encouraged him to continue working in the national interest.

As Assam welcomes Harmeet Singh as the new in-charge DGP, the transition marks a new era for Assam Police, driven by commitment, efficiency, and a vision for a stronger law enforcement framework.
