Shillong, Feb 24: The South West Garo Hills district administration has ordered all licensed arms holders to deposit firearms and ammunition until the GHADC general election process concludes.
District Magistrate Kum Anendya Raajsshre, in an order under Section 17 of the Arms Act, 1959, said weapons must be handed in at the nearest police station or authorised armoury with immediate effect. “The deposited arms shall remain in custody until the completion of the election process and formal declaration of results,” the order states.
Raajsshre cautioned that any violation will invite strict penal action under the Arms Act and other relevant laws. Exemptions apply only to categories permitted in government instructions and with prior written approval. The measure, she said, aims to maintain public peace and ensure free and fair conduct of the GHADC elections.
