Himanta recalls supreme sacrifice of Assam martyrs during Quit India Movement

Guwahati, Sep 20 :Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday paid tributes to freedom fighters of the state, including Kanaklata Barua and Tileswari Barua, who were martyred on this day in 1942 during the Quit India Movement.

He said the courage and patriotism of the bravehearts will always remain a source of inspiration.

“On this day in 1942, Assam rose with the nation in the historic Quit India Movement,” Sarma said in a social media post.

The CM also recalled the supreme sacrifice of freedom fighters like Mukunda Kakati, Bhogeswari Phukanani and Manbar Nath.

“I pay my humble tributes to these brave sons and daughters of Assam whose courage, sacrifice and patriotism will forever inspire us,” Sarma said.

In another social media post, the chief minister also recalled how on this day in 1942, “Dhekiajuli witnessed one of the darkest yet most courageous chapters of Assam’s freedom struggle”.

“I pay my deepest respects to the 15 martyrs, including young Tileswari Barua, whose supreme sacrifice helped secure our freedom,” he said.

Aged 12 years, Tileswari was among the youngest female martyrs of the freedom struggle. (PTI)
