HSPDP seeks memorial in Nongstoiñ for Hopingstone Lyngdoh

Shillong, June 9: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has urged the West Khasi Hills district administration to build a full-fledged monument for late Hopingstone Lyngdoh, the longest serving legislator of Nongstoin and former KHADC chief, at a suitable site in Nongstoin town.

In a memorandum submitted to the deputy commissioner recently, the youth wing of the HSPDP West Khasi Hills District said Lyngdoh deserved lasting recognition for his contribution to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and to the people of Nongstoin constituency.

The memorandum described Lyngdoh as a leader who spent his life in service of the Khasi people and Meghalaya.

“Late Hopingstone Lyngdoh was a towering figure in public service whose dedication, leadership and contribution to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and to the people of Nongstoin Constituency remain etched in our collective memory,” it stated.

The youth wing argued that a monument would serve multiple purposes: honour his legacy, educate younger generations about his role in public life, and strengthen civic identity in the district headquarters.

It proposed a life-size statue of the leader placed on a granite pedestal, with an inscription summarising his contributions. The structure should include seating and landscaping to make it a space for public gatherings and reflection, the memorandum added.

The HSPDP youth wing suggested several prominent locations in Nongstoin Town for the memorial, including the Children’s Park, New Nongstoin before the DC office, and Lad Nongstoin near the PWD office. It said the administration could choose any site it deems most appropriate.

“The monument will stand not only as a tribute to his memory but also as a source of inspiration for future generations,” the memorandum added.

The youth wing has requested the Deputy Commissioner to take up the matter with the state government for approval and funding.
