Shillong, May 13: In the wake of the growing demand for Winter Capital in Tura, the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has raised a demand for Jowai be considered as the state’s Summer Capital, if Tura granted the status of Winter Capital.
“Meghalaya is home to three major indigenous communities namely the Jaintias, the Khasis, and the Garos. Hence all must be treated equally to uphold fairness and harmony in the state,” the JSU said in a statement.

Pointing out the lack of infrastructure growth in Jaintia Hills region, the JSU said, “In this connection, granting Jowai the status of Summer Capital would not only promote balanced development but also ensure equal representation among the communities.”
It warned that the government’s any move to grant seasonal capital status to one region while excluding the Jaintia Hills would lead to in widespread dissatisfaction.
In such act of “disparity”, the JSU along with the people of Jaintia Hills will be compelled to launch democratic protests to demand their rightful share, the JSU said.
