James set to be elected unopposed

Shillong, June 9: National People’s Party (NPP) leader and MDA-II candidate James K Sangma for Meghalaya’s lone Rajya Sabha is set to be elected unopposed as no other candidate has filed nomination for the election scheduled for June 18.

The scrutiny of nomination papers was conducted at Assembly Secretariat on Tuesday.

According to Returning Officer and Assembly Secretary Malthus S Sangma, Sangma’s papers were “completely in order and accepted”.

The former home minister and NPP national working president filed his nomination on June 8.

With no other candidate in the fray, the June 11 deadline for withdrawal of nominations will mark the final step before the election process is completed.
