Shillong, July 13: The Khasi Students’ Union has questioned NEIGRIHMS over the absence of female staff in the observation room in the alleged molestation case of a minor at the hospital.
The student body submitted a letter to the hospital authorities seeking accountability.
“We also put a question to the NEIGRIHMS authority on why were there no female nurses present when that child was taken to another room for observation… the law also prescribed that a female nurse has to be present whenever there is a female patient involved,” KSU general secretary Reuben Najiar said.
The union also demanded the immediate arrest of the accused in a case of sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl at NEIGRIHMS.
A delegation of the KSU met East Khasi Hills SP on Monday and submitted a complaint regarding the incident that allegedly occurred on July 4.
In the letter, KSU alleged that after undergoing an appendix operation, the minor was taken to an observation room and left alone without an attendant or female nurse.
“She was left alone with a male nurse who sexually assaulted her but she could not shout or scream for help as she had just come out of surgery and had no strength,” the letter stated.
The union said the girl told her mother about the incident after being shifted to the ward. An FIR was filed at Mawdiangdiang Outpost the same day, but KSU alleged there was no immediate police action.
After the meeting, Najiar said the SP assured that the case will be fast-tracked.
