Man dies in stone pelting incident in Rajabala

Tura, Jan 9: A member of the pressure group ACHIK was killed following stone pelting by a mob in the Rajabala area of West Garo Hills this afternoon, prompting police to beef up security across the region.

According to police, members of the ACHIK group, travelling in two vehicles, came under attack from an angry mob who began pelting stones at them. In the melee, one of the ACHIK members identified as Dilseng M Sangma (32 years) was hit and reportedly fell off the vehicle.

On being alerted, a police team from Rajabala police station rushed to the site and brought the injured person to New Bhaitbari hospital. The victim was referred to Tura Civil Hospital but tragically passed away while being shifted to Tura. The deceased hailed from Phulbari region.

The ACHIK organisation members are alleged to have gone on an inspection of stone quarry sites in the Rajabala region and were returning when the attack took place. Multiple quarries, some alleged to be illegal, operate in the Zekabari to Rajabala region and unscrupulous illegal mine operators are suspected to be behind the attack. Police have launched an investigation to arrest those behind the incident and security has been beefed up at vulnerable areas of the district.
