Imphal, Sep 21 (PTI) A West Bengal resident, who was allegedly kidnapped from the airport here on his arrival in Manipur, was rescued by security personnel in Bishnupur district, police said on Monday.
Md. Wasim Akram was rescued by Moirang Police Station personnel on September 19 from the Naranseina area, around 40 km from the Imphal airport.
The driver of a vehicle in which Akram was taken to a location was arrested, an official statement said.
The police did not give details about when the man was kidnapped, the motive and the identity of any group involved in the crime.
“On September 19, personnel of Moirang Police Station rescued Md. Wasim Akram, a West Bengal resident who escaped from his abductors at Naranseina by pulling the handbrake of a transport vehicle and fled to security personnel for help. He was abducted upon his arrival at Imphal airport,” the police said.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested, the police statement said, adding that the investigation was underway to track and apprehend the suspects.
Security forces have been conducting search operations and area domination in the fringe and vulnerable localities across Manipur since ethnic violence broke out three years ago.
The ethnic conflict that erupted in May 2023 between the valley-based Meitei and the hill-based Kuki communities has claimed at least 306 lives, with 49 individuals remaining missing and thousands left homeless.
