MHRC takes suo motu action after ‘no care’ at Civil Hospital for NEHU crash victims

Shillong, Nov 25: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a disturbing incident where two North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) students, injured in a November 17 accident at the campus, were allegedly left unattended at Shillong Civil Hospital.

One student reportedly bled for nearly an hour before being shifted to Nazareth Hospital.

“The Commission has issued a notice to the Director of Health Service (MI), Government of Meghalaya, to cause an effective enquiry and to submit a detailed inquiry report to the Commission on or before the 7th January 2026,” said a statement issued by the MHRC Secretary on Tuesday.

The students, Stephanie Shadap (22) and Daritngen Ponduhkhei (20) hit by a speeding car driven by an intoxicated security guard, suffered severe head and facial injuries.

Witnesses, who were fellow NEHU students, had accused Civil Hospital staff of neglect as they allegedly failed to attend to the injured students.
