Asanang, April 24: Meghalaya Minister for PHE, Marcuise Marak has raised concern over the use of social media for negative purposes, while addressing a public gathering at Asanang village near Tura on Friday. Turning his attention to the digital landscape, he lamented how social media often prioritizes sensationalism and negativity over constructive problem-solving. He warned against the trend of content creators pushing false narratives for “likes” and financial gain, specifically debunking a viral claim that the government was disproportionately funding the Khasi Hills over the Garo Hills. The Minister dismissed these rumors as entirely baseless, urging the public to seek the truth rather than falling prey to online agendas.
Further addressing recent local unrest, the Minister clarified the government’s stance regarding the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections. He detailed how the government aimed to fulfill its duty by holding elections, but intervention by those seeking to incite trouble led to violence and the eventual suspension of the polls. He explicitly corrected a widespread false narrative that the Conrad K. Sangma government had “called in the army” against its own people, explaining that central forces were only deployed to protect life and property while state forces were on duty elsewhere. Instead of dissolving the council, the government opted to extend its term for six months to allow for necessary legal amendments in the interest of the Garo people.

By honoring “Nationally Honoured” Jendragre and the five best-performing villages—Sasetgre (represented by Chelting M. Sangma), Chandigre (Walnang Marak), Chanhugre (Moritha R.
