More villages to be adopted as ‘textile hubs’: Paul

Shillong, Apr 5: The state government has taken an initiative to adopt more villages as “textile hubs” to further boost the traditional textile industry in Meghalaya.

“We are now on the move to adopt more villages as hubs for Meghalaya’s textiles,” Textiles minister Paul Lyngdoh told reporters on Friday.

The government has already announced a number of measures to support the weavers, both as individuals and societies, he said, adding, “We are taking the industry to an entirely new level.”

Hailing the recent GI tag conferred on the state’s Ryndia silk, the minister said, “It is a very good and welcome news for our weavers and artisans and for the entire department.”

The GI tag for Ryndia was a result of four years of untiring efforts by Textiles department with support from the weavers’ association, he said.

“It is a huge victory for Meghalaya’s textile industry,” he said.

Informing about a textile hub to be inaugurated at Nongpoh soon, he said “There will be a plethora of textile related activities, including space for weavers and artisans to showcase their products… for visitors to actually see how work is done, the colouring and dyeing…”

Lyngdoh also informed about “a few big names” in textile industry having approached the state government for collaborations in the sector.
