New MDCs to take oath on Thursday elect CEMs on Friday

Shillong, Feb 26: Newly elected members of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) will take oath on Thursday. The respective chairman and chief executive member (CEM) will be elected the next day.

The oath will be administered to the new members of district council (MDCs) by the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills for KHADC and deputy commissioner of West Jaiñtia Hills for JHADC.

While the respective DCs will conduct elections to the post of chairman in KHADC and JHADC, the latter will oversee the elections of respective CEM.

Meanwhile, the Governor has summoned a two-day meeting of KHADC and JHADC for oath-taking of MDCs on Thursday, and election of chairmen and CEMs on Friday.

Election of chairmen of both the councils has been scheduled at 11 am and that of CEMs at 2 pm.

In the just concluded elections to KHADC and JHADC held on February 21, the Voice of People Party (VPP) won 17 out of 29 seats in KHADC and it will form the new Executive Committee on its own.

The ruling NPP won just four seats and the UDP got five, besides two Independents and the HSPDP got one seat.

In JHADC, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) emerged as the single largest by winning 13 seats while the VPP came second bagging eight seats. The NPP will retain power by forming the executive committee (EC) with the support of Independents and other parties.

The UDP won the seats and the Congress also bagged three seats besides two Independents.
