No power cut during Christmas festivities: Power minister

Shillong to witness power disruptions on Saturdays

Shillong, Dec 20: Power consumers in various localities of Shillong are likely to experience power disruptions on Saturdays due to ongoing maintenance work, usually taken up during the dry season.

“This is not load shedding. The power disruption in certain areas is due to maintenance work. During this dry season, we get an opportunity to ensure that our system is in order. Wherever changes or upgrades are needed, we undertake them at this time,” power minster AT Mondal told reporters on Thursday.

Reiterating that this is not load-shedding, he said, “From now on, you’ll notice power disruptions, especially on Saturdays, as we carry out essential repair work.”

The repairs had to be taken up due to some “overloading issues” in the substations.

The minister assured that adequate measures have been taken to avoid power shortages during the festive season.

However, he said disruptions might occur due to unforeseen issues like transformer failures, conductor problems, or tree falls.

“As of now, we are well-positioned in terms of energy availability in the state,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mondal assured that there would be no power cuts during the upcoming Christmas festive season even as he appealed to the people to consume power judiciously.

All necessary measures have been taken to prevent any power disruption, he said.

“This is a crucial time, especially for students preparing for various examinations and the government is committed to providing a stable power supply,” he said while encouraging citizens to use electricity responsibly while celebrating, promoting mindful energy consumption.

Any outages, he clarified, would only occur due to unforeseen issues, such as transformer failures.

Mondal said the government is well-prepared to handle any such situations and urged citizens not to worry about power availability during the festive season.
