No pressure to release MCTODA leaders: Police

Shillong, Nov 10: The state police have maintained that law will take its own course regarding the arrested leaders of agitating Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners & Drivers Association (MCTODA).

The MCTODA leaders, arrested for their role in a violent protest at Mawryngkneng, face four cases, including stone pelting and damage to vehicles.

“The leaders were the people who were right in front in that agitation and when all these crimes were committed out there, they were people at the forefront,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem told reporters on Monday.

“The law will take its own course,” he said while asserting that there is no pressure to release them.

The bail decision rests with the judiciary, Syiem said.

Referring to the incident at Mawryngkneng, Syiem explained that the crowd had been warned by the magistrate on duty not to obstruct truck movement, but they resorted to violence, prompting police to use mild lathi charge.

The SP dismissed allegations of police excesses, stating that the action was minimal and necessary to restore order.

He mentioned that the crowd resorted to heavy stone-pelting and assault, and even a person was abducted, for which police had to resort to do mild lathi charge.
