‘Conrad Sangma-led Govt will continue to serve the people even better’
Shillong, Feb 24: The National People’s Party (NPP), which managed to emerge as the single largest party in autonomous district council (ADC) elections in Jaintia Hills and faced a debacle in Khasi Hills, has decided to form the executive committee (EC) in JHADC even as it would introspect on the reasons of the party’s poor performance in KHADC.
The NPP has won 13 out of 29 seats in Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and only four in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
“Being the single largest party, the NPP is ready to form the EC along with a few like-minded partners who are willing to be part of the coalition,” said Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang.
Allies in the NPP-led ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) will also partner with NPP in the JHADC, he said.
“I would like to thank the people of Jaintia Hills for the support and for the confidence that they have shown by giving 13 MDCs to the NPP,” he added.
On NPP’s poor performance in Khasi Hills, Shangpliang said, “We need to introspect and find out where things went wrong and the party would be sitting in the next coming days to review its performance in every constituency.”
He, meanwhile, made it clear that KHADC election results are not a vote against the state government.
“People maybe wanted a change in the district council,” he said.
“The government under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma will continue to serve the people even better,” he asserted.
Pointing out that NPP candidates came second in several constituencies, he said, “If there are lapses somewhere, we will try to find out and try to correct those issues… we would like to serve the people… we would like to respect the mandate of the people.”
The NPP spokesperson also said the party MDCs are ready to sit in the opposition along with other partners and would serve the people for the next few years in the district council.
