PM Modi to open indoor cricket academy in Shillong

Cricket facilities to be virtually opened in 6 NE states from Sikkim tomorrow

Shillong, April 26: The newly built Indoor Cricket Academy at Kurkalang, Shillong will be among other indoor stadiums to be virtually inaugurated in six North Eastern states by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Sikkim on Tuesday.

The inauguration marks the culmination of a sustained push to revive and complete a facility that had remained unfinished for several months under the previous administration, stated James Sangma, president of Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) in a press release.

“I had requested the intervention of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to fast-track the completion of the Academy. I am grateful that due to his interventions, the Indoor Cricket Academy is now ready to be inaugurated and used,” Sangma said.

The MCA president also urged all members associated and affiliated with the MCA to be present at during the landmark inauguration of the indoor cricket academy.

Sangma mentioned that securing electricity connection at the facility within a record 12 days from Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is among the notable achievements in the project.

Meanwhile, he said the Prime Minister inaugurating the Indoor Cricket Academy “will mean a great deal for our State and the Northeast collectively in boosting cricket in the region.”

“It is my priority to make the best use of this facility, which the BCCI has provided to our State. I have already discussed with various Committees, such as the Cricket Advisory Sub-Committee composed of senior former players, regarding planning activities in the Indoor Cricket Academy for our players,” he said.

The Indoor Cricket Academy at Kurkalang, developed with support from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is expected to significantly enhance training infrastructure for cricketers across Meghalaya by providing a state-of-the-art indoor facility for year-round practice and development.
