Shillong, April 30: In a major breakthrough, East Jaintia Hills Police have arrested a 32-year-old man from Haryana in connection with the April 14 ATM break-in at Wapung village that saw miscreants decamp with Rs 9,57,900 using a gas cutter.
The accused, identified as Irsad aka Rumi of Mewat, Haryana, was arrested from Tauru, Haryana, with the assistance of Haryana Police, East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Pankaj Rasgonia said in a statement on Thursday.
On April 14, miscreants forcibly broke open the ATM machine of HDFC ATM at Wapung using a gas cutter and stole Rs 9,57,900.
An FIR was registered with Khliehriat police station.
“The accused is a member of a criminal gang from Mewat which is involved in ATM theft cases in East Khasi Hills, Ri-bhoi, East Jaintia Hills and North Garo Hills,” the SP said.
He said the other identified accused members have been arrested by Ri Bhoi police in connection with a case registered with the Umiam police station.
