Probe launched into ‘ISIS-K’ poster at Tura, appeal for calm

Poster found on electric pole warns Garos to leave parts of West Garo Hills by 2027

Tura, Jan 28: A poster claiming to be of the terrorist outfit, ISIS-K, containing a threatening message for the Garo community, has created sharp reactions while police have taken the matter seriously and launched an inquiry to nab the perpetrators.

The poster pasted on an electric pole near New Tura Matchakolgre Field, close to Law College area at Araimile on Wednesday morning, warned the Garo community to vacate certain areas, including both hill and plain belt regions, in West Garo Hills by 2027.

The note titled “Warning to Garos” claimed ownership of the land, according to West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police.

The poster, which also carried extremist symbolism, was reported only from Araimile area and has not been found elsewhere in the district so far.

Police suspect the act may have been carried out by vested interests with the intention of creating fear and escalating tensions.

A video and photographs of the poster have since circulated on social media, causing concern among residents.

Upon receiving information, police personnel rushed to the spot, immediately removed the poster, and registered a case at Araimile Police Station.

An enquiry has been initiated to trace those responsible and to verify the origin and authenticity of the material.

Police sources noted that the area where the poster was pasted lacks CCTV coverage and remains poorly lit during evening hours due to the absence of streetlights, posing challenges in identifying the individuals involved.

While authorities have not confirmed any direct links to extremist organisations at this stage, the incident is being taken seriously, particularly given the district’s proximity to the Assam border and the international border with Bangladesh. Security agencies have heightened vigilance as part of precautionary measures.

The Superintendent of Police assured that the situation remains under control and appealed to the public to remain calm, avoid spreading rumours or unverified information, and cooperate with the investigation as it progresses.

Meanwhile, the SP said, the poster will be sent for Forensic analysis in order to check its authenticity.

“All out efforts are being made to identify and trace the persons responsible for pasting the poster and those who are circulating it to create panic and create communal disharmony. Accordingly, necessary actions will be taken against them as per relevant section(s) of law,” he said.

Any suspicious activity or information, public are requested to share the same with the nearest police station, out post, beat house or the police control room, Tura immediately through the following mobile numbers: 8837423053, 7005530510 and 9089199064.
