Shillong, June 26: Even as the Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) has started its preparation for Shillong Lok Sabha bye-election, the party is still awaiting a go ahead from Meghalaya High Court for its candidate Prof Batskhem Myrboh in this regard.
The party expects the Meghalaya High Court to pass an order in a day or two on the pending No Objection Certificate for Myrboh, VPP leader and Mawlai legislator Brightstarwell Marbaniang said on Friday.
The bye-election to the seat, which fell vacant following sudden demise of VPP MP Dr Ricky Andrew J Syngkon in February this year, is likely to be held by October or November.
Myrboh, a faculty member at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), requires an NOC from the university to contest.
The issue is currently before the High Court after NEHU had allegedly delayed the matter.
‘Rumour’ about Ardent dismissed
Meanwhile, the VPP legislator dismissed allegations that party president Ardent Basaiawmoit plans to contest from two constituencies in the 2028 Assembly polls.
“Nothing as such, these are all rumours being spread by opponents,” Marbaniang said when asked about the speculation.
Basaiawmoit is the sitting MLA of Nongkrem.
Stressing that no one in the party gets special treatment, Marbaniang said, “That is the stand of the party. It is me, not Ardent, everyone is the same.”
