Shillong, Jan 16: Construction work on the much-awaited Shillong ropeway project will start soon, chief minister Conrad Sangma has said.
Informing that the government has already allotted the work to the implementing agency, he said the work is delayed due to a pending permission sought by the agency to clear trees below the proposed ropeway.
“I am not sure if that (issue) has been resolved but I presumed it has been resolved by now,” Sangma said.
Although forest department had given permission to chop branches of the trees, the implementing agencies requested for complete clearing of the forest and proposed a “forest fire line”, he said.
A “forest fire line” is a gap maintained within forest to prevent forest fire to extend beyond that line.
“They requested that if that fire line could be right below the ropeway project, it would serve both the purposes,” he said.
Admitting that the matter is still pending, the chief minister said, “All the paperwork and everything has been done. We expect the actual physical work to start very soon.”
