State eyes pumped storage projects

Shillong, Oct 23: The state government is vigorously working with the Ministry of Power for implementation of pumped storage projects (PSPs) in the state, power minister AT Mondal said on Tuesday.

Unlike run-of-the-river projects where state government gets 12% free power and 1% for local area development, PSPs don’t have such provision.

“So we have to take a call for the interest of the state,” he said, adding, “NTPC has found out three PSPs and we are working on this new technology.”

Meanwhile, the power minister asserted that Meghalaya did not face any power deficit this year.

“We have not gone for load shedding,” he said while clarifying that power disruptions witnessed during the period were due to natural causes.

“These disruptions are because of old equipment, old wires, etc.,” he said.

Underlining the need for self-sufficiency in power generation, Mondal pointed out that the state’s power demand has been increasing by 11 to 12% every year.

“We should not always depend on other utilities… accordingly we are working out on our power projects,” he added.
